While companies spend millions on security products, attackers continue to steal their corporate secrets (and customer data) by exploiting the asset most often ignored on the security budget — people. Organizations that want to keep their trade secrets a secret must find better ways to help employees understand the importance of security. Packed with suspenseful lessons and quick tips for employees, Cyber Within helps organizations take that challenge head-on.

Q. Why did you write Cyber Within?

A. I wrote Cyber Within to provide employees with an interesting guide to help them understand cyber and insider threats. The book is meant to provoke thought and provide examples concerning the current attacks happening in the corporate world today. I used a story format because I know how tough it is getting employees to read technical—and often dry—security guides.

Q. What does Cyber Within mean?

A. Cyber Within covers insider threats and how they conspire with outsiders to steal corporate secrets. Both corporate users and foreign competitors can use similar tactics to steal corporate secrets; however, it’s the insider “within” the company that can more easily create mayhem.

Q. Who is your intended audience?

A. I wrote Cyber Within for corporate and government workers. Whether an employee works in sales, human resources, or the IT department, they are all targets of attacks described in Cyber Within.

Q. Why should companies buy this book for their employees?

A. It’s often difficult to get security practices to resonate with employees. Traditional computer-based training allows employees to rush to the end without paying much attention to the content. Additionally, the content is often dry so employees are often uninterested. Companies should buy Cyber Within for their employees because it’s fun, engaging, and has a memorable story with lessons they can apply today.

Q. How does your book benefit the reader?

A. Cyber Within helps readers understand the internal and external threats we face today (such as the recent attacks against Google and other major companies). It enables them to become cognizant of attack indicators so that they can prevent data loss and help maintain their organization’s image when attacks do occur.
